“You know, I’ve seen him (Martin Freeman) in The Office and The Hobbit and Sherlock, and he always plays this kind of buttoned up guy, but there’s always this element…he’s always got this energy under the buttoned-up-ness, where you always feel like he could snap at any minute, and that was the energy I wanted for the character, obviously. And I told him and his agent that the journey that Lester Nygaard goes on in this show is the journey that I think you would want to go on as an actor, which is to show that you’re not just this bottled-up guy, but look what happens when the bottle gets opened, and look how far you can go…and I think he really enjoyed that, he really liked that fact that he’s not normally asked to do this level of material, this darkness. He’s a great comedic actor, but I think he proved here that he’s just a great actor period.”
